Flatbread that is soft, fluffy, and typically cooked in a tandoor (clay oven). However, you can make delicious naan at home using a stove skillet, pan or oven.

Preparation Time: 25-35 minutes
Dough Rising: 1-2 hours
The dough needs time to rise and double in size.

Cooking Time: 4-5 minutes
Skillet Cooking: 2-5 minutes per naan
Each naan takes about 1-2 minutes on each side to cook on a hot skillet.
Oven Baking: 4-5 minutes
If using an oven, the baking time is typically around 4-5 minutes at a high temperature.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted ghee (clarified butter)
  • Additional flour for dusting
  • Optional toppings: garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast:
    • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare the dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
    • Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, and olive oil or melted ghee.
    • Mix the ingredients to form a soft dough.
  3. Knead the dough:
    • Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  4. Let the dough rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.
  5. Divide and shape the naan:
    • Preheat your skillet or oven to a high temperature.
    • Divide the dough into golf ball-sized portions. Roll each portion into an oval or round shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Cook the naan:
    • If using a skillet, cook each naan on a hot, lightly greased skillet for 1-2 minutes on each side until puffy and lightly browned. If using an oven, bake at a high temperature (around 500°F or 260°C) for 4-5 minutes or until they puff up and brown.
  7. Optional toppings:
    • Brush the cooked naan with melted ghee or butter, and sprinkle with garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds if desired.
  8. Serve:
    • Serve the naan warm with your favorite curry or dip.
