Oven Baking: 4-5 minutes
If using an oven, the baking time is typically around 4-5 minutes at a high temperature.
Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted ghee (clarified butter)
- 3-4 cloves of garlic, finely minced
- Additional flour for dusting
- Chopped fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish)
- Butter or ghee for brushing
Instructions:
- Activate the yeast:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Prepare the dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, olive oil or melted ghee, and minced garlic.
- Mix the ingredients to form a soft dough.
- Knead the dough:
- Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
- Let the dough rise:
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.
- Divide and shape the naan:
- Preheat your skillet or oven to a high temperature.
- Divide the dough into golf ball-sized portions. Roll each portion into an oval or round shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Cook the naan:
- If using a skillet, cook each naan on a hot, lightly greased skillet for 1-2 minutes on each side until puffy and lightly browned. If using an oven, bake at a high temperature (around 500°F or 260°C) for 4-5 minutes or until they puff up and brown.
- Brush with butter and garnish:
- Brush the cooked garlic naan with melted butter or ghee while still hot.
- Optionally, sprinkle chopped fresh cilantro on top for added flavor and garnish.
- Serve:
- Serve the garlic naan warm with your favorite curry or dip.
